Clear Creek Watershed Enhancement Project

A dozen stakeholders in the Clear Creek Watershed have identified priorities and implemented strategies for watershed enhancement. The mouth of the 100 square mile watershed empties into the Iowa River in Coralville with headwaters about 25 miles west.
Beginning in 1998, the Soil and Water Conservation District named Clear Creek as a priority watershed and initiated the Clear Creek Watershed Enhancement Project as a key aspect of the urban-rural outreach program, earlier called "The Non-Farmer's Guide to Agriculture." The watershed includes over 300 commercial farming units, around 250 rural-non-farm residences, the towns of Oxford and Tiffin, and much of urban Coralville. During the floods of 1993 these three communities were severely impacted and Interstate 80 was closed by floodwaters from Clear Creek.
A Board was named to provide continued leadership to the project, exploring strategies and opportunities. The Board's membership includes representatives from partners in the project: the District Commissioners, the cities of Coralville and Tiffin, the University of Iowa, Clear Creek Amana Community Schools, County Conservation Board, business leaders, farmers and residents.
